Indian Navy Frigate INS Vindhyagiri Sinks After Collision

An Indian Navy frigate, the Vindhyagiri, slightly smaller than a 378, (and slightly newer) was involved in a collision off Mumbai, caught fire, and after being brought into port, capsized and sank. There were no causalities. Video of the ship on fire, in port is here.

  2. Apparently the ship had family members of the crew aboard and was returning to port. Following are two reports, of which the second strongly suggests the Merchant Vessel rammed the frigate.

    • Thanks, that is the best video I have seen. Just saw it over at but was unable to link directly to the story that contained the video.

It does appear the Vindhyagiri was turning left which would have been a violation of the admonition to always turn right when in extremis. Not only that but this looks like a crossing situation with the container ship was on the starboard side of Vindhyagiri. Plus of course there is the big boats over little boats rule.

Here is an outside view that shows the difference in size:

And this is a review of previous incidents in and around Mumbai:

They really do need a VTS and perhaps a traffic separation scheme if they don’t already have one.

  3. German Merchant ship, was involved. German defence Minister willing to sell 126 Euro Fighters to India and wanted to go from India to Pakistan and sell defence products to them as well. German civilians are for “No War” at home ground but sell defence product to all big and small nations. Germany defence export nation behind US and Russia. Indian Tax payers will have to bear the loss of Navy warship INS Vindhyagiri and then buy products from Germany to keep German living standard high.
