Marines Blog, the official blog of the US Marine corps reports, “The U.S. Senate passed a resolution on March 7, 2011, declaring March 30 ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.’ The resolution currently awaits a decision by the House. This day will be recognized across the U.S. as a day of commemoration, a day to pay the proper respect to the veterans who sacrificed so much during the war.”
A bit overdue, the entire post is worth a read.
I notice the Coast Guard Compass of yesterday makes no mention of this. Oh well, simply forgotus again.
One of my hopes was the Coast Guard would put some research into finding out who all served in Vietnam and the rest of SE Asia. Except for the WHECs, I am not sure if anyone ever jotted down those assigned there. It would be a nice piece of historical information.
I didn’t expect a “Welcome Home” 40 years ago and certainly didn’t expect one yesterday. Didn’t get one either, nor did I lose sleep over that fact. 40 years after the event it seems to me this is to assuage the guilt some might feel over the way they thought of us and treated us back then, so why should I help them feel warm and fuzzy about themselves?
I was at the airport in San Francisco to catch a flight to Hono prior to departing for Nam. I was in uniform. You know, big white flat hat that has “U.S. Coast Guard” on the front? As I walked through with my seabag a couple unkempt slovenly looking souls shouted “Babykiller!” and “Warmonger” at me. I just looked at them and laughed. Displayed my neatly manicured finger to them.
I fgure those are the ones that MIGHT be feeling a tad guilty about it now.
