Interesting photos and story by three photographers about their extended unauthorized stay aboard ships of the Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay, California. Among the ships there, is the old icebreaker, USCGC Glacier (WAGB-4) readily identifiable by her red hull.
Thanks to the Naval Institute Blog for bringing this to my attention.
You have been Mia!!
It was strange seeing the photos taken aboard the ex-USS Nereus (AS-17) and ex-USNS Ponchatoula (TAO-148) in the exact same places I was in just last month. I and three other volunteers were on an officially sanctioned mission to obtain parts for our historic ship, the ex-USCGC Comanche (WMEC-202). Those people must think they are urban commandos, sticking it to “The Man” or something. However, it has never been difficult to obtain permission to visit the Reserve Fleet if you are honest about your intentions and the internet is already chock full of pictures taken by people who have made legal visits – including journalists.
William, tell us where Comanche is now.
Comanche doesn’t yet have a permanent home. Currently she is tied up at the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum in Tacoma. Last week she was in Gig Harbor and the week before in Bremerton. See link for more info:

I remember GLACIER when she was just AGB-4 and still painted haze grey. I was a Comm observer for a radio communications exercise held with her in 1966.
