AP is reporting that a Yangtze River cruise ship has capsized, and it appears most of the 458 people reported aboard were lost, with the notable exceptions of the captain and chief engineer. The cruise was from Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing, and many of those aboard were elderly.
It’s terrible but I don’t think anybody should be smug about such things not happening in the US. There are ~100pax. small cruise vessels operating on the Columbia and Snake rivers, far removed from response resources, during shoulder seasons. An aids to navigation team a few hours away may be the only resource other than whatever the local sheriff can muster.
Indications are the ship was hit by a tornado. http://gcaptain.com/cruise-ship-capsize-china-confirms-force-12-tornado/
The ship has been righted and investigation continues: http://gcaptain.com/raising-the-eastern-star-china-cruise-ship-righted-but-hundreds-still-missing/
