The GAO has issued a report on the progress of the Coast Guard and Navy’s joint efforts to procure new Heavy Polar Icebreakers.
The format seems to be a little different. This is a pdf, but instead of scrolling down, you page right (or left) at the edge of the screen. All total there are 41 pages, but most of it is in, what looks like, PowerPoint format.
Thanks to Bryant’s Maritime Blog for bringing this to my attention.

Discussion of the icebreaker competition and some mention of the intention to reserve space weight and power for weapons. http://www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/articles/2018/4/16/coast-guard-icebreaker-competition-under-way
Curiously, the article emphasizes that Fincantieri has an icebreaker design reference (USCGC Mackinaw via Marinette Marine) but forgets to mention that USCGC Healy was built by a shipyard that was acquired by Huntington Ingalls Industries. It’s a lot closer to the proposed heavy polar icebreaker than the “heavy” Great Lakes icebreaker.
Also, the Canadian polar icebreaker is not “slated for delivery this year” – I’d be surprised if the Canadians managed to build it before the USCG commissions its first new icebreaker.
Still, it’s quite an informative article about the ongoing acquisition project. I wonder when we’ll start seeing the first icebreaker designs in public.
