NSC #10, the future USCGC Calhoun (WMSL 759) Begins Sea Trials

Just a quick note. The Navy League on-line magazine “Seapower” has an article, “HII’s Ingalls Shipyard Has Capacity for More Navy Shipbuilding” that includes a statement that the tenth National Security Cutter began sea trials on June 27.

  1. With the OPC predictably behind schedule, overweight and over budget, they should have built one or two more of these.

    • And now it looks like the opportunity has passed. We might consider what make do ships might step up and fill some roles.

      • We are pressing FRCs in roles for which they were not intended.

Something a bit bigger with better endurance, seakeeping and aviation favilities would be very useful.

It always comes back to Chuck’s Cutter X idea.

    • Maybe with the recruiting challenges, CG leadership felt like they wouldn’t be able to fully staff/support more NSCs? Either way, Eastern has been a flop in the OPC program…started work in 2019, and still haven’t finished the first one. And they’ve sued cause they didn’t get the rest of the program.

At this point, just give the whole contract to Bollinger LOL

      • I think the CG placed a big bet on Eastern and the OPC. That bet unfortunately has not paid off.
