Forbes reports on, Offshore Patrol Cutter builder, Austal’s continuing difficulties.
The author, Craig Hooper, whom I regard as a friend of the Coast Guard, was at one time an Austal executive, departing in 2013. I would have to believe; he knows what he is talking about.
Thanks to Nick for bringing this to my attention.

We need Austal to succeed. If need be, maybe they are the new Naval Shipyard we need. Buy them out similar to the auto industry bailout in 2008/2009.
I do think perhaps we need a West Coast, Coast
Guard Yard.
Somebody needs to tap into Vigor in the Portland area, the former Todd shipyard.
More Navyyards would not be a bad thing.
What about Vigor in Portland, the former Todd Shipyard?
We badly need Austal or something like it to succeed but it’s been so poorly managed that it’s tough to reward it.
Perhaps it’s better to spend that money on folks that know how to run a shipyard.
Let someone else buy the assets and run the business.
The CG is the big loser here. They can’t catch a break with the OPC program.
Way too many eggs in the Austal basket now. Are we really going to make Subs and carriers dependent on them too?
Yes, a West Coast Coast Guard shipyard sounds like a good idea. But with the financial woes of the service, that might be only a dream.
We using the former Navyard in Vallejo (now commercial) on a regular basis. It may be a good substitute.
