While the Houthi have made several attempts to use kamikaze Unmanned Surface Vessels, this is their first successful in a long time. Deception was the key to success. The attack craft was not small, fast, or highly maneuverable. The attack was not made under cover of darkness. It just looked like all the other local traffic. There is probably a lesson here.

The guys with the guns on the freighter just look like they were out for a vacation cruise, where were the binoculars looking at the approaching boat while far away?
Where was any alert when the boom boat turned into the freighter?
Lesson for the guarding forces. Don’t be fooled.
Why no warning shoots?
If I were the shipping company who owned this vessel, I’d want a refund from that Armed Guard company. 😂
They were probably there to prevent piracy. This did not look like piracy so they were unprepared.
Not saying they shouldn’t have been prepared, but its human nature.
Why arent we doing convoys in the Red Sea?
Assets and limited cooperation. France said outright they weren’t joining a US-led multinational operation. India, China, and others aren’t doing anything at all. (Scared of provoking Iran.) Most who are helping, are small NATO countries, other than Great Britain, but even the once-mighty RN struggles with deployments and numbers of ships available.
Which brings us to the USN. For far too long, the USN has focused on CVBGs and ARGs. They have the 4 Burkes at Rota as an independent DesRon, and that’s it. All other deployments are singletons which have some time available to deploy for short, show-of-force evolutions, like a run through the South China Sea and Taiwan straights.
With the Aegis system, it makes more sense to create an air defense “fence” which creates an umbrella from Gulf of Aden through B-E-M, and into the Red Sea. With these new attack drone boats, that will not be sufficient. The failure of the LCS program (which is what is really needed here) has come home to roost…
