Peter Rybski also wrote a similar article on the recently-rebranded Canadian Coast Guard Multi-Purpose Icebreakers (MPI) that the competing Bollinger-Seaspan-Rauma-Aker team is offering to the USCG.

While I don’t necessarily agree with all of his opinions, together these two articles form a very informative package about the two proposed “ready for production” designs which are quite different from each other. The biggest challenge is trying to guess what is the concept of operations and mission profile the USCG is thinking for these vessels.
Although I would obviously prefer them choosing the MPI over the MPPS 100 for personal reasons, they wouldn’t really go wrong with either design.
