Navy Accepts Their First Helicopter, 16 Oct. 1943 (Coast Guard Pilot)

The Navy History and Heritage Command notes that on this date in 1943 the Navy accepted its first helicopter. Note that the pilot was a Coastie. The Coast Guard was responsible for much of the early work with helicopters. The Cobb (WPG-181) was the first ship specifically outfitted to operate helicopters.
