SM1 Douglas Munro, Anniversary. Will there be a USCGC Munro?

Today marks the 69th anniversary of the death of Douglas Munro. The Coast Guard historian’s page is here. There is some background on the unit he was serving with here.

Apparently there will not be a “Legends Class” National Security Cutter named for Munro. This is the current plan: WMSL 750 Bertholf
, WMSL 751 Waesche,
WMSL 752 Stratton,
WMSL 753 Hamilton
, WMSL 754 James,
WMSL 755 Stone,
WMSL 756 Midgett,
WMSL 757 Kimball.

When WHEC-724 is decommissioned, we will presumably no longer have a cutter named for the only Coast Guard Medal of Honor recipient.

Perhaps naming the first Offshore Patrol Cutter for Munro, and giving his name to the class, would be appropriate.

  1. I was assuming that the Coast Guard was going to name one of the FRCs after him once WHEC-724 was decommissioned.

Or is the Webber Class strictly for enlisted heroes who have not been previously honored?

  2. An FRC for the Coast Guard’s only Medal of Honor winner? It is a travesty that a NSC won’t be named after him. The least they could to is name the lead OPC cutter Munro.

That is, if there is going to be an OPC…….

  3. An absolute disgrace. But it can be eliminated if they name a new polar roller after him. Or at least, the first OPC. At least the new names aren’t as bad as the Navy’s. Another JFK? A USS Murtha, AKA USS ABSCAM. Hahahahahaha…..

  4. I heard that WMLS-757 was supposed to be named USCGC Munro. What changed? Could this be about the Obama Administration interfering in the naming process, and have WMLS-752 named USCGC Stratton. I understand that the original plan was to be named Hamilton. But the White House intervene on Michelle Obama behalf. She must be more a Jeffersonian than a Hamiltonian. I guess the old saying that Admiral Richover once made needs to be modifed, “Fish and dead medal of honors winers don’t vote”.

  5. Let me see now Sumner I. Kimball a lawyer and political appointed bureaucrat in the U. S. Treasury Revenue Cutter Service office. Versus one Signalmen First Class Douglas A. Munro U.S. Coast Guard how only claim to fame is he received the Congressional Metal of Honor. I say again the Congressional Metal of Honor!!!

    • I’m sure Sumner Kimball was a nice person. But he didn’t win the Medal of Honor, and Douglas Munro did. Someone should start a campaign to fix this outrage.

      • I know Dennis Noble will disagree, but Kimball did not care of the RCS in his post-Head of the Division period. He was constantly at odds with the RCS and some of its officers. He especially did not care for Charles F. Shoemaker (why no cutter named from him? He was certainly better at the head of the Service than Bertholf) who worked actively against Kimball with the Treasury Secretaries.

Kimball did have political clout and this is the only reason the LSS was included in the 1915 act. Otherwise, the LSS would have remained in the Treasury Department as a separate agency and eventually die away. Kimball knew this too, besides he wanted a retirement package for himself, superintendents, the keepers, and surfmen.

Has no one asked why there has only been one Medal of Honor awardee in all these years?

  6. Hey I will signed a petition. They could named a wing at the new Coast Guard Headquaters after Sumner I. Kimball. Better yet the accounting office after all he was a bean counter.

  7. Just as a point of order, you do not “win” a Medal of Honor, you are a Medal of Honor “recipient”, as stated by Chuck. It is not a competition but a recognition.
