The Telegraph reports that, in a recent incident between Chinese Fishermen and the South Korean Coast Guard, two officers attempting to arrest the captain of the vessel were stabbed with broken glass when the Captain resisted arrest. One officer later died of his wounds. Incidents between Chinese F/Vs and the S. Korean Coast Guard have become common.
“As the competition between Korean and interloping Chinese fishermen has intensified, the South Korean coastguard has been put under pressure to act. So far this year, 470 Chinese ships have been seized for illegal fishing, a near 30 per cent rise”

Note this article also relates that there was another attack on South Korean Coast Guardsmen in 2008 when one was killed and 6 other injured.
Crazy stuff going on over there, some very interesting pics from your earlier article “Chinese F/Vs Resist S. Korean CG Enforcement”.
i find it hard to believe that with 370 vessel incursions last year and 470 vessel incursions this year, that this is just a buttload of chineese fisherman who can’t read charts or gps cordinates. i believe that this is part of china’s larger intentions in the south china sea. apparently there is no resource the chineese don’t want in the south china sea.
I think you got a point there Eric, the Chinese after all do hate the South Koreans. The Chinese fisherman are smart enough to gang up with each other against South Korea’s Coastguard. (Even though they still get overtaken)
Something on the Korean reaction:

The Koreans are planning on reinforcing their CG. Note with 27 ships over 1,000 tons planned, the S. Korean CG fleet of large cutters is rapidly approaching the size of the USCG’s fleet.

This time it was a Chinese F/V captain that died in a confrontation with S. Korea.

Here is another report of the same incident with the additional information that the Chinese captain had been shot in the Stomach and that other Chinese F/V had put their crewmen on the boat being inspected: http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/chinese-captain-dead-fishing-clash-korea-26091505
China and S. Korea are in talks over fishing rights, and it appears to be cordial . http://maritime-executive.com/article/south-korea-china-discuss-fisheries-and-boundary-conflict
