  1. Unless the Congress changes US law, I don’t see how this will impact the CG, since we probably won’t become a party to this convention. Besides, the convention doesn’t come into force for years, and when it does, it exempts a large number of fishing vessels.

    • Good point. Unless the CG gets the funding it requires to enforce the change, it will have no effect so long as the kool aid drinkers and lifers who think we can always do “More with Less” win the argument and attempt to take the mission out of hide like they did with the stupid Arctic inititiative.

      • Money isn’t going to change anything, because the convention is significantly flawed.

        Unless I’m misreading the convention, Flag states can exempt their FVs operating solely in their own EEZ (or in a zone 200nm from their baseline), and they can also exempt their FVs operating in other EEZs so long as it’s done pursuant to an agreement with that coastal state.

        In other words, loopholes big enough to drive a truck through.
