Finnish Navy Ice Strengthened Corvette

We began talking about this class of rather unique warships about six years ago. Since then, a lot of comments have been added. I wanted to pass along this info graphic.

What makes these really unique, and perhaps of interest to the USCG, is the Ice Class requirement which translates to non-consolidated (refrozen) ice channels with a thickness of 1.0 meter (3.3 ft) in the middle.

Compared to the Offshore Patrol Cutters, these ships will be a little longer (374 feet vice 360), but also a little lighter displacement (3900 tons vs 4500). They will have a much shorter range (3500 nautical miles vs over 10,000) and a much smaller crew (70 vs over 100), although the total accommodations are similar.

Predictably the Finnish ship is much more heavily armed.

    • Latest specs included in the link above. The conversions to feet were done by me.

      Displacement: 4300 tons
      Length: 117 m (384′)
      Width: 16 m (52.5′)
      Draught: 5 m (16.4′)
      Speed: 26 knots (48 km/h)
      Crew: 73

  2. Chuck, very interesting. Looks like it would be very useful in Alaska. By the way, what is the status of the Argus?

    • I have been wondering why we have not heard anything about Argus, supposedly the first OPC, since her launch October 27, 2023. I emailed Eastern Shipyard but got no response. It has been 19 months with not a word. No photos of it underway for sea trails, not even dock trials.

Also no news about any of the follow on ships.

The silence is defining. I think I will turn this into a post. Eastern has got to want some of the supposed money that will be going to make American ship building great again.

    • The Finns are making a unique class of ships. They are really designed for the Baltic, but Arctic conditions are starting to look more like Baltic conditions with large area having no multi-year ice.

The Navy is showing no interest in building ice strengthened warships.

Also these look quite useful as warships even where there is no ice, unlike the Canadian Harry DeWolf class Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships.
