I don’t have any hard figures, but it seems West Coast migrant interdictions are becoming more common, perhaps even more frequent than in the Caribbean, though the number of migrants in each attempt seems smaller than in LANTAREA interdictions.

The Alien Migrant Interdiction Operations (AMIO) mission provides effective law enforcement presence at-sea and achieves three main objectives: deter undocumented migrants and transnational smugglers from using maritime routes to enter the U.S.; detect and interdict undocumented migrants and smugglers far from the U.S. border; and expand Coast Guard participation in multi-agency and bi-national border security initiatives. Strong partnerships and information sharing with other agencies, such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP), are critical to mission success. While the Coast Guard leads the interdiction mission on the high seas, partnerships with CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement are critical for successful shore-side interdiction operations.

Feb. 26, 2025Coast Guard encounters over a dozen aliens off the coast of southern California

U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Southwest Phone: 206-815-6689

SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard encountered over a dozen aliens off the coast of southern California early Tuesday morning.

Coast Guard Sector San Diego, an Air Station San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew, Coast Guard Cutter Benjamin Bottoms, and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations boat crew participated in the encounter.

Benjamin Bottoms crewmembers turned over custody of the aliens, including Mexican, Chinese, and Indian nationals, to Customs and Border Protection for further processing.

The Coast Guard works closely with federal and international partners to disrupt human smuggling operations and ensure the safety of those at sea. Smuggling attempts via the maritime domain are inherently dangerous, often involving overloaded and unseaworthy vessels.

  4. To be clear, I have long felt the Pacific Area has been under resourced relative to the Atlantic.

Now starting to look like we are getting more migrant interdictions on the West coast than on the East.

Sure would like to see some hard numbers. Definitely fewer assets employed in the effort on the West coast.

SAN DIEGO — Coast Guard Station San Diego response boat crew members interdicted seven aliens aboard a 25-foot cuddy cabin vessel approximately 7 miles west of Mission Bay, California, Sunday evening.

At approximately 5:10 p.m., the crew spotted a vessel that appeared disabled in the water. When the boat crew approached, the vessel suddenly transited south at high speed in an attempt to evade law enforcement.

The Coast Guard crew attempted to stop the vessel using warning shots, which were ineffective, followed by 15 non-lethal pepper ball rounds. The vessel then rammed the Coast Guard boat, causing minor cosmetic damage. The crew disabled the vessel’s starboard engine with three precision rounds, stopping it approximately 4 miles southwest of Point Loma.

The Coast Guard identified seven aliens aboard, all adult males who claimed Mexican nationality. No serious injuries were reported, though the individuals aboard experienced minor irritation from the pepper ball rounds.

All seven aliens and their vessel were taken into custody and later transferred to our Department of Homeland Security partners.

PACIFIC OCEAN — A U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) embarked aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Sampson (DDG 102), interdicted 14 aliens aboard a 33-foot sport fishing vessel approximately 18 miles southeast of Catalina Island, California, Sunday morning.

Watchstanders at the Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operation Center (JHOC) received notification of a vessel crossing north of the maritime boundary line operating with no navigation lights. Sampson approached the vessel as it loitered in the contiguous zone off San Clemente Island and San Diego and observed two persons aboard the vessel giving the appearance of fishing. When Sampson distanced itself from the vessel, it stopped loitering and continued transiting on a northerly course. Watchstanders at the JHOC then directed Sampson to board the vessel using its attached LEDET.

13 adults aboard the vessel claimed Mexican nationality and one adult claimed Ecuadorian nationality.  The 14 aliens and the vessel were brought to Oceanside, CA, and custody of the people was transferred to another Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agency.

Upon mission completion, tactical control of Sampson returned to U.S. 3rd Fleet.

This operation reflects ongoing cooperation between the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and interagency partners to disrupt transnational criminal networks operating in the maritime domain.

Sampson is employed under U.S. Northern Command’s maritime homeland defense authorities with a Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment embarked to enable maritime interdiction missions to prevent the flow of illegal drugs and other illegal activity. U.S. Northern Command is working together with the Department of Homeland Security to provide additional military forces and capabilities at the southern border.

Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security partner agencies interdict multiple suspected smuggling vessels south of San Clemente Island

U.S. Coast Guard Southwest District Public Affairs: 206-815-6689

SAN DIEGO — The U.S. Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security partner agencies, supported by the U.S. Navy, interdicted five suspected maritime smuggling vessels and apprehended 62 aliens during coordinated operations south of San Clemente Island, Saturday.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., watchstanders at the Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center received reports from a partner agency aircraft of three vessels suspected of smuggling illegal aliens, transiting northbound from Mexican waters. The vessels were described as 20-to-25-foot cuddy cabin-style boats carrying fishing gear and fuel barrels onboard.

The Coast Guard Cutter Haddock (WPB-87347) already on patrol in the area, launched a small boat crew to investigate the first vessel and conduct a boarding. Located approximately 26 miles south of San Clemente Island, the vessel was observed flying a U.S. flag and was compliant during the boarding. Haddock crews reported 10 aliens aboard the vessel, all claiming Mexican nationality.

A Department of Homeland Security partner agency aircraft located a second vessel of interest and directed a law enforcement crew to the vessel’s location, ultimately leading to a pursuit. Failing to comply with law enforcement commands to stop, warning shots were employed to compel the vessel’s compliance. The vessel complied, and 10 additional aliens were identified onboard, all claiming Mexican nationality. All 10 individuals were subsequently embarked aboard the Haddock.

A Department of Homeland Security partner agency vessel then stopped a third vessel suspected of smuggling illegal aliens. Nine additional aliens, all claiming Mexican nationality, were identified and safely embarked aboard the Haddock.

Additional reports of suspected smuggling vessels in the area prompted further response. A U.S. Navy helicopter and small boat crew from the littoral combat ship USS Augusta (LCS-34) with an embarked Coast Guard Maritime Law Enforcement Team (MLET) assisted in locating and interdicting a fourth cuddy cabin vessel. The Coast Guard MLET identified 16 aliens aboard the vessel, 14 claiming Mexican nationality and two claiming Colombian nationality. All 16 individuals were detained and transferred to the Sentinel-class Forrest Rednour (WPC-1129).

A fifth vessel was later intercepted by a Department of Homeland Security partner agency vessel, which employed warning shots to gain compliance after the vessel failed to obey law enforcement commands to stop. Seventeen aliens were aboard the vessel,16 claiming Mexican nationality and one claiming Guatemalan nationality. All were taken into custody.

In total, crews interdicted five vessels and apprehended 62 aliens in under 90 minutes. The Haddock and Rednour crews transported all aliens to Coast Guard Sector San Diego, where they were transferred to another Department of Homeland Security agency for further processing. One unaccompanied minor was identified among the group.

Department of Homeland Security partner agency personnel seized four of the five vessels. The fifth vessel, which was taking on water and determined to be unseaworthy, was left at sea.

The Coast Guard routinely conducts patrols alongside interagency and Department of War partners to detect suspected maritime smuggling operations and interdict illegal activity, while ensuring the safety of life at sea. This case is an example of the stellar partnerships and complex coordination required amongst all agencies involved.
