Why Pac Area is Under Resourced

Map of Compact of Free Association nations: Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands are in red; the United States is in blue. Prepared by Fephisto via Wikipedia.

Ran across this chart and thought it might be useful to pass it along. 85% of the US EEZ currently is in areas under the USCG Pacific Area Commander, but, in addition, the US has obligations to help the Compact of Free Association States that also fall under the authority of the Pacific Area, specifically District Oceania (formerly D14).

  1. And yet . . . we truncated the NSC buy, and bldg program. Makes sense (tongue in cheek). We sure needed those navy frigates before now. A multi-warfare Aegis guided missile Destroyer Escort . . . in numbers . . . would be nice. Sad state of affairs.

    • I contend that every Carrier should be based in the Pacific so that they don’t have to make the long trip from the East Coast and around the Horn to respond to the Chinese.

Unfortunately we don’t have the necessary shipyards on the West Coast.

We have lots of DDGs but we don’t need their level of AAW to deal with the air threat for most of the distance from the West Coast to Guam.

Not too long ago, I believe it was the CNO, told the head of Military Sealift Command that their ships would not be escorted. That cannot be allowed to stand.

China has satellite recon and nuclear submarines. Escorts have to be provided.

Convoys don’t need to look like WWII. They can now be spread out to prevent submarines from having multiple simultaneous targeting solutions.

The air threat will probably be limited to cruise missiles from submarines. That means we will probably not see massive salvos. The escorts we need for most of the distance across the Pacific probably don’t need Aegis (but the technology is coming down in cost).
