The US Naval Institute Proceedings has an article advocating a restructuring of the ME rating, written by Commander Doug Daniels, and Master Chiefs Ed Briganti and Todd Walters, U.S. Coast Guard. Worth a look.

Having observed the culture when it demanded the joint rating review around 2000 that collapsed the Fire Control Technicians into the Electronic Technicians, the QMs into BMs, and the TCs and RDs into OS, I am amazed now at all the more recent new rates….
When they created the Information Technicians, did they ever take over the sound powered phones from the EMs…as they are equipment used to pass information? …or gyros or degaussing given to the ETs since the EMs provide the power to that equipment?
What amazes me is that there are no officer specialty codes [commissioned] for supply, contracting, or logistics [not general mission support management…i.e.sector dept head].
