Alex Haley’s Last Sistership

LastStandOnZombieIsland reports USCGC Alex Haley’s last sister ship, the former
USS Beaufort (ATS-2), now the Republic of (South) Korea Navy Ship ROKS Peyongtaek (ATS-27), is to be decommissioned and scrapped.

The blog has a suggestion that might be worth pursuing.

“Maybe the South Koreans will let the USCG go over Peyongtaek for spare parts before they send her to the breakers.”

These ships were built in Britain by Broke Marine. That is very unusual for any US Navy ship. It probably also means finding spares may be more difficult that it would be for a US built ship.

Coast Guard Outlook 2015-2016

DefenseMediaNetwork has published an online version of the new “Coast Guard Outlook.” I have not read it all, there is a lot there, 164 pages. Fortunately, it allowed me to embed it above.

It includes an interview with the Commandant, a story about the 100 year history of Coast Guard Aviation, one about the Coast Guard in Vietnam, and another about the Offshore Patrol Cutter, along with several others.

When I first brought it up, the print was too small to read comfortably on my laptop, but you have two ways to get a larger view. Clicking on the page twice enlarges it (maybe too large). There is also a slider at the lower left that changes the size of the page you are viewing. Unfortunately neither adjustment is carried over when you go to the next page.

WMECs and WLBs Getting New Gyros

A small thing, but encouraging.

NavyRecognition is reporting that the Coast Guard has contracted to replace the gyros on fourteen 210 foot Reliance Class WMECs, in addition to those on ten Juniper class 225 foot WLBs that were contracted for in April.

The gyros are reported to use a new technology and be both cheaper and more reliable.

Seeing that it appears we will have most 210s around for more than another decade, at least they are getting some newer equipment.

(My only question is, there are 16 Juniper class, what about the other six?)
